Excessive Vehicle Noise Is Already Illegal in Denver.

We have laws. We just can’t enforce them.

A small number of vehicles are creating constant, extreme noise across Denver neighborhoods—
and the city currently has no practical way to stop it.

Why this matters

  • Excessive vehicle noise affects neighborhoods well beyond major corridors

  • Residents report repeated daily disturbances from modified exhausts and racing activity

  • Loud vehicle activity is often associated with speeding and reckless driving behavior

  • Chronic exposure to elevated noise can negatively affect sleep, stress levels, and overall health

What residents reported
Initial responses collected from residents near the Broadway corridor

  • 68% of residents are disturbed multiple times per day

  • 85% support stronger enforcement of vehicle noise laws

  • ~75% support automated enforcement tools like sound cameras

What the law says

  • Colorado law prohibits modifying a vehicle to be louder than its original factory muffler

  • Denver also prohibits excessive or unreasonable vehicle noise

In practice:

  • The “no louder than stock” standard cannot be measured in real-world conditions

  • Enforcement depends on impractical testing methods or subjective judgment

The problem

Denver has laws against excessive vehicle noise—but they are difficult to enforce in real-world conditions.

  • Standards rely on outdated and impractical testing methods

  • Enforcement is effectively absent in day-to-day conditions

  • Agencies lack practical tools to apply the law on the street

 Result:
A small number of vehicles operate with little accountability

What we’re trying to do

  • Document where and how often this is happening

  • Show the scale of the problem across neighborhoods

  • Support practical, enforceable solutions
